Donald Miller has spent much of the last decade interviewing survivors: of genocides, of earthquakes, of pogroms, of poverty, of war. His ethnographic research has taken him to Rwanda, Armenia, the war-torn former Soviet Republic and the tattered fringes of Los Angeles. The work has resulted in several books, exhibitions and oral histories.
You wouldn't think that someone who has documented so much gloom would have such a sunny personality. "We have found that despite the tragedies that people experience, they all share one thing: hope," he says.
