Resolution 77-78-08
Forced Retirement; Merit; Tenure and
Promotion
I move the following
resolution be sent to House-Senate conferees on H.R. 5383 as an expression of
the Faculty Senate: We consider the Atenured professor exemption@, which prohibits institutions of higher education
from retiring any person until the age 70, except only such members of the
faculty as may be tenured, to violate the principle that individuals should
be judged on the basis of merit and ability. Legislation that employs age as
the basis for making a discriminatory classification of faculty members, and
which would permit the forced retirement of a competent tenured teacher or
scholar five years earlier than it would permit the forced retirement of any
other competent person, is unacceptable.
