Academic Freedom; Free Speech;
Faculty Handbook
Whereas,
the Faculty Senate affirms the principles of academic freedom specifically
stated in the Faculty Handbook, namely, AFaculty members of the University: (1) have the same
rights and responsibilities of free speech, thought, and action as all American
citizens@ (P. 25) (2) Amay not be penalized by the University for
Expressions of opinion or association in their private or civic capacity.@ (P.22). Whereas, an off-campus organization, the
Club of Life, has distributed a leaflet attacking Gerald Larue, Professor
Emeritus of Religion and Archaeology at the University of Southern California,
demanding Athe firing of Gerald Larue for advocating and
participating in Nazi crimes against humanity.@ Be it resolved that the Senate reaffirms the free
speech rights of our faculty and deplores any and all intemperate attacks on
faculty colleagues such as Emeritus Professor Larue.
