Resolution 85-86-25
Discontinuing Academic Units;
Financial Exigency
I propose the following
amendment to Section I: Introduction of the Statement of Policy and Procedures
for Discontinuance of Academic Units. Add a #3, as follows: Before a decision
to discontinue, significantly reduce or reorganize an academic unit not
mandated by financial exigency is made, it is required that the University=s educational and academic mission and associated
objectives be formulated and agreed to by the Faculty Senate. This educational
and academic mission and the associated objectives shall constitute the basis
for considering prospective discontinuance, significant reduction or
reorganization of an academic unit. Before discontinuing, significantly
reducing or reorganizing an academic unit for academic or educational reasons,
the unit shall have been given a sufficient period of time (i.e., not less than
three years) to take the necessary and appropriate steps to modify and/or
improve its programs such that it is in conformity with the University=s educational and academic objectives.
