Resolution 86-87-21
Center for Excellence in Teaching
The establishment of a University of Southern California Center for
Excellence in Teaching has been proposed. The three primary goals of this
center would be: Cinitiate programs that address campus-wide teaching
problems; run programs that promise to enhance the quality of classroom
teaching and intellectual inquiry at USC; Cpublicize, coordinate, and enrich existing teaching
resources; build working relations with teaching-related units; afford
opportunities for department-, faculty-, and student-initiated projects; Cserve as university teaching advocate and ombudsman;
involve alumni, parents, and students in the university=s teaching mission, generate campus discussion on
teaching excellence; and promote it as an important factor in the university=s reward structure. On behalf of the Faculty Senate
Teaching Committee, I move that the Faculty Senate endorse these goals and
support the establishment of this Center.
