Resolution 91-92-28
Special Faculty
Whereas, The mission of
the University of Southern California is to be an intellectual community that
provides the highest quality undergraduate, graduate and professional education
within the setting of a research university; The fulfillment of this mission
may require, in some academic units of the University, faculty that perform
activities that do not fully meet the nationally accepted criteria for tenure,
as they are fully accepted by USC; Such Aspecial@ faculty are intended to meet very clearly defined
academic needs. Therefore Be It Resolved That Each academic unit must develop
policies and procedures justifying why the implementation of their mission
requires such Aspecial@ faculty, for what period and in what number, and
that such a justification is part of the process of review of proposed
categories of special faculty; Pending the approval of the mutually
satisfactory agreement between the faculty and the University administration of
a comprehensive document on the Special Professoriate, all new special faculty
appointments must be reviewed individually by the Special Committee on
Promotion and Tenure Policy.
