Resolution 95-96-07

 

Academic Freedom; Tenure Policy; School of Medicine

 

Whereas, the principles of academic freedom are central to the very nature of universities, and whereas, tenure is one of the key pillars that sustains academic freedom; and, Whereas, certain unites [sic] of the University, such as the School of Medicine, may be considering changes in the tenure system that may not be consistent with the principles of academic freedom; and, Whereas, the Academic Senate and the Provost=s office are planning to implement a task force that will review policies and procedures on tenure in order to make them consistent with the Faculty Handbook and strengthening their centrality to the faculty/university relation; therefore, Be It Resolved, that the Academic Senate reaffirms that the principles embodied in the tenure system are central to the mission and the very nature of the University.
