Intellectual Property Policy

WHEREAS, the Academic Senate, on 10 May 2000, voted to endorse the principles of a proposed Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Policy as presented by the University and the Research Committee;

WHEREAS, this policy brings USC more in line with the practices at comparable institutions of higher education on such matters as royalty sharing arrangements and support for inventors;

WHEREAS, the Office of the Provost, through work with the University’s Research Committee, has incorporated these principles in a revised policy document, entitled University of Southern California Intellectual Property Policy (12 February 2001);

WHEREAS, this revised policy introduces more choice for royalty sharing, permitting inventors employed by the University prior to the effective date of this Policy to continue their current royalty sharing arrangements or choose new ones, with associated new benefits it provides for a commercialization fund available to inventors who use the new royalty arrangement, and improved support for all inventors through enhanced staffing at Office of Technology Licensing; and

WHEREAS, inventors employed after the date of this policy will be subject to this policy, and all current inventors may choose to elect the new royalty sharing arrangements now or at a future time;

BE IT RESOLVED THAT, the Senate endorses the principles outlined in the revised policy of 12 February 2001. (Attached)
