Statement of Policy on Emeriti Status

[RATIONALE: Many clinical faculty in the Medical School have been given Emeriti status in the past by the Dean (although in violation of the Faculty Handbook.) The recent enforcement of this policy by the Provost’s office has created great distress among long-time clinical faculty in the Medical School who have been denied Emeriti status.]

The administration and the Executive Board have approved the following statement of policy and urge the Academic Senate to recommend its adoption.

Therefore, it is moved:

That the policy on emeriti status be amended as follows:

Emeritus

Conferred upon regular tenure track or full-time non-tenure track faculty members at the time of their retirement from the University after at with at least ten years of full-time service. Conferred by the Provost upon the recommendation of the appropriate department or school and cognizant Dean. Emeriti faculty may be offered full-time or part-time employment with the University for a specified term, subject to the approval of the Provost as provided in Section 4.2.
