Expanding the Visual Field: Staging the Body Politic is the theme of the 7th Annual Graduate Student Symposium, sponsored by the USC Department of Art History.
This year’s theme examines the formation of socialized identities manifested by representations of the body within the public sphere. Graduate students are invited to submit papers from a broad historical and geographical range and a variety of critical and interdisciplinary approaches that consider how the public context bears on the construction of subjectivity.
Specific topics could include, but are not limited to, issues of the interaction between identity (e.g. age, gender, ethnicity, and class), performativity, the pleasures of viewing, fashion, taste, and private space with censorship, style, propaganda and public space.
The symposium will be a one-day event, including the presentation of a paper by a keynote speaker.
