As part of the 2003 LA JAZZ Festival, the Thornton Jazz Orchestra performs with special guest violinist Jerry Goodman, a member of the fusion-inspired Mahavishnu Orchestra.

The USC Thornton Jazz Orchestra is an 18-piece ensemble featuring the most talented and outstanding jazz studies students from the Thornton School. Through innovative concerts and collaborations with major jazz musicians, the group explores the stylistic possibilities of the jazz orchestra and concentrates on the hard swinging style of the classic big bands. The flagship of the jazz studies department, the ensemble performs worldwide at jazz festivals, as well as for marquee television and live performing arts events. Shelton Berg, the dynamic director of the Thornton Jazz Orchestra, and chair of the USC Thornton Jazz Studies Department, is an accomplished jazz pianist, composer, arranger and educator.
