The flagship of the jazz studies department, the ensemble performs worldwide at jazz festivals, as well as for marquee television and live performing arts events. Shelton Berg, the dynamic director of the Thornton Jazz Orchestra, and chair of the USC Thornton Jazz Studies Department, is an accomplished jazz pianist, composer, arranger and educator.
