About this Image:

The eight (8) original frames for this panorama were most probably made on a 8X10-inch view camera with a standard focal length lens, on glass plate negatives. The photographer stood atop the Lankershim Hotel, which at that time was the tallest building on Broadway. The images are all mis-dated as "1907." The correct date of late 1905 is easily ascertained by reading the details of the street banners hung across Broadway. The copies used here are copies of the original prints, which have probably been lost. They belonged to the personal collection of J.P. Getty, Jr., and are now held in the Department of Special Collections, Getty Research Institute For the History of Art and the Humanities, Los Angeles California. The archival prints were transferred to digital format with a digital camera, by Don Williamson of the GRI. The author then worked with these digital copies. He cropped and adjusted the images with Adobe PhotoShop, and stitched, blended, and rendered images into the panorama shown here using MGI Photovista (r) software.
