SAMPLE ENTRY: SHULMAN, JULIUS (1910-)

GO TO SAMPLE ENTRY

This sample is a medium-length biographical Entry on Julius Shulman, the renowned Los Angeles-based architectural photographer. It illustrates several things: the kind of in-depth coverage possible in deLA; the possible layout of a digital encyclopedia Entry; and the way we will structure each Entry to bristle with links (“cross-references” in trandaitional encyclopedias, shown as underlined words and phrases in this sample) to other Entrys and to multimedia resources such as “Image Galleries,” “Audio,” and supplemental databases. The live digital version contains audio excerpts from Shulman’s oral history (conducted by Philip J. Ethington, the author of this Entry). The sample is signed by Ethington at the end, with a “last revised” date. As Shulman is still productive, living at an advanced age, this Entry will need to be revised within perhaps the next ten years. Our updating procedures will allow such Entries to remain current when conditions represented in a given Entry change, when scholarship evolves, and so on.

In the scheme we have described throughout the proposal, this sample Entry would lie in the following hierarchical subject tree chain:

Arts and Architecture-->Photography-->Architectural Photography-->Julius Shulman

A user of deLA could reach this Entry by any of the six modes of searching (1) Traditional alphabetic browsing; (2) Browsing via Subject Categories; (3) Keyword searching; (4) Full text searching; (5) Spatial/Locational searching; (6) Chronological searching.
