FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS

Second International Workshop on Structural Control

"Next Generation of Intelligent Structures"

18-21 December 1996

LOCATION: Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST)

SPONSOR: International Association of Structural Control in conjunction with the Japan Panel on Structural Response Control and US Panel on Structural Control Research.

HOST: The local host is the Research Centre at HKUST, a branch of the university charged with developing applied research programs that are relevant to Hong Kong's economic and social development with focuses on the environment, energy and the infrastructure of Hong Kong and China.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this Workshop is to bring together engineers, scientists and others interested in the general field of response control and monitoring of buildings, bridges and other civil infrastructure systems, in order to facilitate research, development and applications of these technologies as a means of improving safety, serviceability and economy of these systems when subjected to environmental loads, especially wind loads. To achieve this objective, the Workshop program will be structured so participants can (1) share new information and ideas relating to these technologies, and (2) work together to make recommendations which will promote international cooperation in sharing relevant test facilities and experimental results.

SOLICITATION OF PAPERS: Papers are sought on applications and research in response control and monitoring of buildings, bridges and other civil infrastructure systems. Relevant topics include devices, methodologies and operational systems for active, passive, hybrid and semi-active control as well as for structural health monitoring, and also topics in wind engineering and smart materials. There will also be invited papers on some of these topics.

Abstracts must be submitted for review by July 19, 1996 in the format: paper title, authors with full names and affiliations (presenting author listed first with address and fax number) followed by the abstract with a maximum length of 500 words. The preferred mode of submission is by email as an ASCII text file sent to IASCWS96@USTHK.UST.HK, but if necessary, the abstract can be faxed to: Prof. Jay Chen, Research Centre, HKUST at (852)2358-1334 or -1582. Authors will be notified concerning acceptance by August 30, 1996.

Accepted papers and invited papers are due by October 31, 1996 at: Research Centre, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Clear Water Bay, Kowloon, Hong Kong, either as an electronic file sent to the above email address or by mailing a 3.25" PC-formatted disk. Either a LATEX, MS WORD or WORDPERFECT file may be submitted. The figures should be in separate POSTSCRIPT files or mailed in camera-ready form so they can be scanned and converted to POSTSCRIPT. Proceedings will be published electronically and will be made available via Internet. Printed abstracts will be distributed at the Workshop.

FIELD TRIPS: Participants will have the opportunity on the afternoon of December 20 to visit the site of the Tsing Ma suspension bridge which is currently under construction to provide road access to the new Chek Lap Kok International Airport. Another field trip will be available for Saturday, December 21, to visit Lantau Island by ferry to see the largest outdoor Buddha in the world and then to visit the construction site for the Chek Lap Kok Airport.

PARTICIPATION: Participation in the Workshop is limited because of the restricted capacity for meeting facilities and field trips. First priority will be given to the speakers and working group chairs and reporters. Any remaining slots will be assigned in the chronological order of registration.

REGISTRATION: The Workshop registration fee is US$300 which includes lunches, a banquet, daily transport between Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, and the HKUST campus, and the two field trips. An early registration fee of US$250 will apply before September 30, 1996. All registration must be done by November 30, 1996. There will be no on-site registration. The registration fee in the form of a cashier's cheque, bank draft or money order in US dollars and made out to IASC should be sent along with the completed registration form attached below, to Prof. Jay Chen at the above address for the Research Centre. Participants should make their own hotel arrangements but the pick-up point for transport to and from the HKUST campus will be the Royal Pacific Hotel on Canton Road in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon.
