One of Malawi's major export crops is tea. Since the British colonial times there have been large tea estates in the southern region of the country.
The tea pickers spend all day moving among the tea bushes on the plantations, picking only the newest, bright green leaves and putting them in the large baskets which they wear on their backs.
Twice a day the tea pickers meet with a foreman from the estate and weigh their tea. The amount that each worker has picked is recorded. The tea is then put into large sacks in preparation for transport.
Since the average daily wage of an adult worker is only one kwacha ($ 0.30) entire families usually work in the fields.
