Category: The Natural World
Using exciting current research as a focal point, this course will examine the fundamental concepts, experimental approaches and technological applications of modern physics, chemistry, geology, and biology. Interrelationships among the disciplines, societal ramifications, and laboratory experiences will be included. Students will benefit from interactions with active scientists who are award- winning teachers. The professors' highest priority will be to help students gain an appreciation of the nature of modern, cutting-edge science. This course will emphasize student participation. An important contribution will be short research papers on topics relevant to each section of the course. These reports will also be presented in the laboratory sections for the benefit of all. Reports of the results of laboratory experiments will also be discussed. A fraction of the grade for the course will come from written examinations.

Readings include: Trefil and Hazen, The Sciences-An Integrated Approach; The New York Times; The Los Angeles Times; Wall St. Journal; and scientific articles provided by the course coordinator.
