Walis Island

Walis is a small island we encountered while steaming from Wewak to Aitape. The villagers here reported feeling some ground shaking and a small sea level fluctuation. They also reported hearing the "whooshing" sound of waves rushing across the offshore reefs. Runup on Walis was recorded at 0.5 m. On a nearby islet, a suspect watermark indicating 1.4 m runup was also found. The villagers on Walis were very friendly and gladly gave us a tour of their small island.

Tsunami surveys always seem to attract a crowd...

The locals wave goodbye.
