Tsunami Damage on Fatu Hiva

After arriving in the town of Omoa, we recovered from sea sickness with a big lunch (!). Our first objective was to survey the school house and the beach in Omoa. We met with teachers at the school who witnessed the waves. The inundation line and locations of our transects are shown in the figure below.

The headmistress of the school reported that she noticed the wave after hearing a loud noise from the sea. She looked up to see a surge of water entering into the school yard. The wave appeared to be coming from a southerly direction. The surge came across the yard, hit the walls of the school, flooded through doorways and over the window sills in to the classrooms. The brunt of the surge continued northward, across the soccer field destroying the canoe shacks and surging up the small creek. The measured runup was over 2 m at the school and on the soccer field. (transect 1 above) The runup at transects 3,4, and 5 were succesively larger with water marks of over 6 m at transect #3. Some still images taken of the damage can be found here
