About Instruction
USC Libraries employees offer instruction to further the University’s mission to educate students—from freshmen to postdoctoral researchers—by supporting their development as scholars and enhancing their experience as lifelong learners. A key service is course-integrated information literacy instruction.
Information literacy is a set of abilities requiring individuals to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information. The USC Libraries builds upon the Association of College & Research Libraries' "Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education" as well as similar discipline-specific standards to introduce students to tools for research and resources to enhance critical thinking about data, evidence and information.

Library Instruction Sessions
By prior arrangement with the faculty member or instructor, a librarian will either visit the classroom or conduct an interactive session during class time in one of the Libraries learning rooms that include student computer workstations. When instruction is requested, the librarian will contact the faculty member or instructor to receive applicable course, assignment, and topic information. Instruction requests must be submitted at least 7 working days in advance of the class meeting, to allow time for the customization that optimizes student learning.
