
Special Collections at the University of Southern California announces the availability of research grants for scholars whose work would benefit from access to primary source materials in the University Libraries' archival and printed collections.
USC Libraries Special Collections, the oldest institutional collection of rare materials in Southern California, contains 130,000 rare books, 1.4 million manuscripts, and 1.7 million photographs. Strengths include regional history, natural history, philosophy, German literature and culture (especially exile literature) American literature, aeronautical history, USC history, and fine printing. Special Collections is especially noted for its photographic holdings, which are made up of several discrete collections, including the Hearst Collection (1.2 million photographs) dating from 1904-61; the California Historical Society Collection containing 23,000 photographs dating from 1890-1960; and the "Dick" Whittington Collection containing 500,000 images dating from 1925-60.

Who is eligible?
Anyone with a scholarly interest in conducting research at USC is invited to apply. Faculty, graduate students, undergraduates, and independent scholars whose work would benefit from use of USCLibraries Special Collections are eligible. Those who have previously received a research grant from USC are not eligible to apply.
What may the grant money be used for?
Grant money may be used for travel, for lodging, or for incidental expenses. Grant amounts are awarded up to $1,000 and must be used within one year of notification of the award.
