The University's Collections
Development of the University Libraries' collections is a responsibility shared by library faculty and teaching faculty. Teaching faculty members are encouraged to recommend library materials that should be purchase.

What is a Subject Selector?
Subject selectors are librarians responsible for collection development and research services in a particular area of study. In addition to a Master's degree in library science, they have undergraduate or graduate degrees and/or expertise in a subject area. Subject specialists act as liaisons between the libraries and academic departments, select materials for the collection, provide information on acquisitons as well as the strengths and weaknesses of the collections, and provide library instruction.
What is a librarian's role?
Librarians can help develop research strategies, identify varied sources of information, and assist in locating information in support of USC's teaching and research mission.
Research/Reference Services
Faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to contact any of the librarians listed on our Subject Area pages for reference assistance, to make acquisitions suggestions in their areas, or to arrange for library instruction with a subject specialist. If particular librarians are unavailable, another qualified specialist will be appointed to instruct. Or visit our Reference Desk in Doheny Memorial Library located on the first floor near the main circulation desk to speak to a librarian.
