  • La Escuela Argentina de Los Angeles records (0510)
    Collection contains minutes of board meetings, copies of the school's room reservations with USC, newspaper clippings about the school, ephemera, and chronological files of documents from the years 1990-1995. The chronological files include correspondence and memoranda pertaining to the school's business matters, meeting minutes, financial records, and press releases.
  • Lanterman (Frank) Papers (0222)
    The Frank Lanterman collection includes the legislative papers of Assemblyman Frank Lanterman, who served in the California Assembly from 1950-1978. The papers span the years 1965-1978. Frank Lanterman was known as California's "Father of Mental Health"--a tribute to his long service in the California Assembly as a champion for the mentally ill community of California. Lanterman was born on November 4, 1901 into a family whose arrival in California dated back to 1875. He studied music at USC and later tried to make a career in the movie industry. However, family business required his attention, and eventually he became a successful businessman. Elected to the California Assembly at the age of 49, he served fourteen consecutive terms. His first notable legislative contribution was to co-author the Municipal Water District Act by which the Foothill Municipal Water District was created to service the communities of La Canada, La Crescenta, and Altadena. Lanterman devoted most his energy fighting for the handicapped. In 1964 and 1968 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention. He died in 1981.

  • Lenel (Irmgard) papers (0212)
    This collection contains the papers of Irmgard Lenel, who was born in Germany in 1901 and who immigrated to the United States in 1937. She was a politically active socialist involved with groups like Women for Legislative Action and the Friends Committee on Legislation. Her papers include correspondence, photographs, legal papers, and some periodical publications.
  • Leopold (Werner F.) Papers (0095)
    Notebooks, file folders, card files, research notes, personal diaries, and photographs from the career of Prof. Leopold (1896-1984); subjects include German linguistics, foreign language instruction, and language acquisition in children; Leopold taught for many years at Northwestern University and briefly at USC.
  • Lerner (Arthur) collection on Poetry Therapy (0179)
    This collection contains publications pertaining to poetry therapy collected by Arthur Lerner, as well as a small amount of his correspondence. Lerner was one of the pioneers of the use of poetry therapy techniques as a form of psychological therapy.
  • Lert (Richard) papers (0210)
    This collection consists of Richard Lert’s video and audio recordings of performances, rehearsals and lectures, personal papers and his music score library. Lert was born in Vienna and trained as an orchestral conductor in Germany. He moved to the United States in 1932 with his family and was the conductor of the Pasadena Symphony Orchestra from 1932 until his retirement in 1972.
  • Lessing (Erich) Hungarian Revolution photographs (6008)
    Photographs created by Austrian photographer Erich Lessing, documenting the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. The photographs were printed in 2006 for an exhibition held at USC Libraries' Doheny Memorial Library commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution.
  • Lewitzky Dance Company records (0203)
    Based in Los Angeles, California, the Lewitzky Dance Company was formed in 1966 by Bella Lewitzky and gave its last performance on May 18, 1997. The archive consists of papers, films, photographs, costumes, programs, posters, stage plots, and sound recordings. It covers the Company's archived and working papers from all offices, including the Manager, Booking and Production offices.
  • Lichty (Lenna) Collection on Federico Schroeder Inclan (0096)
    Draft biography of the German-Mexican playwright (and USC graduate) by Lenna Lichty; research notes; letters, 1960-80, from Inclan to Lichty; typescripts of various works by Inclan. Inclan was born in Mexico City, Mexico, in 1910. He studied humanities and electrical engineering at the Aleman Colegio of Mexico City, and in the US at UC Berkeley. He began to write for the theater in 1948.
  • Linn (Robert) papers (0310)
    The Robert Linn papers contains drafts and final copies of music compositions by Robert Linn, along with a few programs for concerts and other events. Linn joined the faculty of the USC School of Music in 1957 and served as the Chairman of the Music Theory and Composition Department from 1973 to 1990. Over the course of his career, Linn published compositions for symphony and wind orchestras and chorus and chamber ensembles.

    Typescripts, galleys, drawings for published books by Longstreet (b.1907), including All Star Cast: An Anecdotal History of the City of Los Angeles (1977), The Pedlock Inheritance (1972), The Generall (1974), The Bank (1976), The Kingston Fortune, The Pedlocks in Love (1978), The Pedlock Inheritance (1972), The Saint Had Eight Wives, Straw Boss (1978), Strike the Bell Boldly (1977). The novelist, screenwriter, and art historian taught creative writing at USC, 1975-80.

  • Los Angeles Area Federation of Settlements and Neighborhood Centers records (0411)
    The Los Angeles Area Federation of Settlements and Neighborhood Centers records consists of correspondence, reports, memorandums, bylaws, and meeting minutes, 1954-1976 (bulk 1965-1967) that document the development and founding, and activities, of this non-profit organization. The conception and incorporation of the federation are very well documented; also included are records pertaining to some of the major programs sponsored by the Federation, including Head Start; and the Federation's funding relationship with United Way of Los Angeles.

    This small collection consists of annual reports issued by the City of Los Angeles Board of Social Service Commissioners, whose responsibilities lay in the regulation of fund raising for charitable uses. The reports contain statements of accounting, information about solicitation of funds, and summaries of the commission's actions. Present are the reports for 1939, 1940, and 1949-1969.

  • Los Angeles City Directories, 1886-1953 (0235)
    City directories are among the most important sources of information about urban areas and their inhabitants. They provide personal and professional information about a city's residents as well as information about its business, civic, social, religious, charitable, and literary institutions. A typical city directory provides a listing of residents, streets, businesses, organizations or institutions, giving their location in a city. The collection consists of 78 bound volumes of Los Angeles city directories covering the years 1886 through 1953, though not every year is represented.

    This collection contains correspondence, financial and publication records, scrapbooks and drafts of articles documenting the history of the Los Angeles Corral of the Westerners. The Los Angeles Corral was founded in 1946 and promotes the study and understanding of Western history through publications and events.

    This small collection consists of 3 reports commissioned by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on delinquency. Included are: "Proposal for a Consultant Study of Juvenile Delinquency Programs in the County of Los Angeles" (1964); "New Careers and Job Development" (1970); and "Report on the Study of Delinquency Prevention and Community Action Programs" and two addendums with background data (1973).
  • Los Angeles County Bureau of Public Assistance Division of Child Welfare records (0469)
    Los Angeles County Bureau of Public Assistance Division of Child Welfare records consist exclusively of documents relating to adoption case recording, collected between 1959 and 1966 by Marian Peterson, Assistant Casework Director of Child Welfare Services. These include examples of forms used by agencies (public and private) across the country and in the Los Angeles area; information from the Child Welfare League's Case Recording Institute 1966 conference; and research materials on case recording.
  • Los Angeles County Coordinating Councils records (0406)
    The Los Angeles County Coordinating Councils records document the activities of the Los Angeles County Coordinating Councils (later the Federation of Community Coordinating Councils of Los Angeles County) and Coordinating Councils, Inc., an organization directed by members of the Board of the LA County organization. The records contain meeting minutes, correspondence, and reports, 1930-1952, created by all three organizations, and as such give a detailed view of the activities of these related organizations.

    This collection consists of reports, plans, manuals, informational bulletins, and miscellaneous unpublished papers issued by the Los Angeles County Department of Health and Los Angeles County Department of Health Services. The latter agency was created in 1972, and the Department of Health was incorporated into Health Services.

    The bulk of the material in this collection consists of studies, reports, and other publications that the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health has either issued or commissioned, 1960-1992.
  • Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services records (0431)
    The Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services records consist of materials generated by agencies within the DPSS (the Bureau of Social Services and the Staff Development Division) and the DPSS itself, its predecessor agency, the Department of Charities, and the Public Social Services Commission. Included are reports and studies, memorandums, correspondence, committee agendas and minutes, and training materials. The chronological span of the DPSS series, including the Public Service Commission, is 1948-1999, with much material dating from the decade of the 1970s. The Staff Development Division encompasses material dating from 1971-1981, and the Bureau of Social Services holds material from 1974-1981. Thus, this collection is especially strong in documenting the history of the DPSS in the decade of the 1970s into the early 1980s. As a result, it covers such important changes in national, state, and local welfare as the implementation of Title XX and the development of such work programs as GAIN.

    This collection consists of various publications issued by the Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations, as well as other Los Angeles County agencies, eg, the now defunct Public Welfare Commission, during the 1960s and 1970s.

    The Los Angeles County Mental Health Advisory Board records consist of the minutes and agendas of the meetings of the Advisory Board, and reports from agencies of Los Angeles County Mental Health Services that this agency forwarded to the Board.

    Spanning the years 1946-1969, this collection contains reports and studies issued by or for the Los Angeles County Probation Department. The reports include annual reports and research reports on specific themes. This collection is especially valuable to researchers concerned with juvenile delinquency and the County's treatment of this social problem.
  • Los Angeles County Superior Court Juvenile Departments Annual Seminars conference proceedings (0482)
    Copies of the proceedings for October 1966 and November 1967 (Second and Third Annual Seminars, respectively). These annual seminars were opportunities for the various County agencies involved in the Juvenile Court process to come together to assist in the improvement of the processes of juvenile justice

    The Los Angeles Florence Crittenton Home records consists of correspondence, meeting notes and minutes, photographs, publications and newspaper clippings related to the history and development of the Los Angeles Florence Crittenton Home. Apart from the photographs and clippings, the greatest concentrations of material are from 1906-1915, 1947-1955, and the 1990s. The photographic collections span the period between the 1920s and the 1950s, and include many photographs of staff and board members.

  • Los Angeles Roundtable for Children Records (0402)
    The Los Angeles Roundtable For Children began in the fall of l982 with a series of informal monthly meetings convened by faculty members at the University of Southern California's School of Social Work, when child welfare leaders from the public and private sectors met to address evident deterioration of Los Angeles county's protective services. The collection contains the group's groundbreaking early volunteer research reports, designed to provide crucial missing information and recommendations for change and reform. All Roundtable reports are collected, together with "Children Now" reports published between 1989-96, reports and records of the Children's Planning Council from 1992-98, and many publications on child welfare from the city and county of Los Angeles and the State of California during this period. Also included are minutes and agendas of the Los Angeles County Commission For Children's Services from 1990-96. These materials, together with a range of miscellaneous reports on topics of concern to the Roundtable - including education, juvenile probation and protection, adolescent pregnancy prevention, and family preservation services - afford a detailed picture of child welfare services in a decade when Los Angeles County, after long neglect, attempted to provide effective protective services to its rapidly increasing juvenile population.

    This small collection documents some of the history and activity of school counseling services in the city of Los Angeles from the 1960s through the 1990s. At least some of the material was collected and created by Dr. Charles Espalin, Director of District Counseling Services in the 1980s-90s. The records contain material from the Los Angeles City Schools' Evaluation and Research Section; the Los Angeles City School District's Guidance and Counseling Section; LAUSD's Pupil Services and Guidance Branch, and District Counseling Services; and the Secondary Head Counselor's Organization of Los Angeles.
  • Los Angeles Unified School District mental health research materials (0429)
    This collection consists of the sources that were used by the team writing the history of the mental health services in the Los Angeles city schools, now known as the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). The materials include memorandums, agendas, papers and reports, publications from organizations outside the LAUSD, annual reports, etc. Of special interest are the ledgers recording the referral and treatment of students at school mental health facilities, from the 1940s to the 1980s.

    The Los Angeles Union Station Collection documents the planning and construction of the historic landmark, as well as the battles that preceded its actual construction. The collection consists of approximately 22 boxes of legal files, blueprints, maps, correspondence, and planning documents regarding one of Los Angeles's most recognizable architectural icons.

  • Los Angeles Webster Commission records (0244)
    On April 29, 1992, the city of Los Angeles erupted into riots after four LAPD officers accused of beating motorist Rodney King were acquitted of all criminal charges. The effects were catastrophic; in total, the chaos persisted for six days and resulted in 58 deaths, 2,383 injuries, and nearly a billion dollars in property damage. The extent of the human and material losses incurred from the riots, coupled with intense public scrutiny of the LAPD, led the Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners to establish the Webster Commission to assess law enforcement's performance in connection with the riots. Included in this collection are interviews, article clippings, broadcasts, reports, emergency operations plans, and internal LAPD documents that were collected and analyzed by the Commission over the course of its study.
