- This collection contains notebooks, galleys, drafts, and outlines for Anne Hawkins’ books about the Pony Express, along with some of her correspondence. Hawkins was a stenographer who lived in Southern California and was the author of Too Like the Lightning, Pony Express and To the Swift.

Biographical Note
Anne Hawkins was born in San Francisco and educated at the University of California and the London School of Economics. Before writing To the Swift, she worked as a stenographer, court reporter and publicity writer. She lived in Southern California.
Scope and Content
This collection contains notebooks, drafts and outlines for Anne Hawkins' books Too Like the Lightning, Pony Express, and To the Swift, all of which are about the Pony Express in early California. Also included are galleys for Too Like the Lightning and typescripts and notes for two other works, a mystery and a novel about striking mine workers. In addition, the collection contains photocopies of Hawkins' correspondence with her agent and some of her personal correspondence from the period between 1948 and 1955. Some of Hawkins' notes are written in shorthand.
