- City directories are among the most important sources of information about urban areas and their inhabitants. They provide personal and professional information about a city's residents as well as information about its business, civic, social, religious, charitable, and literary institutions. A typical city directory provides a listing of residents, streets, businesses, organizations or institutions, giving their location in a city. The collection consists of 78 bound volumes of Los Angeles city directories covering the years 1886 through 1953, though not every year is represented.

Scope and Content
USC's set of Los Angeles city directories cover the years between 1886 and 1953, except for the following years: 1889, 1897, 1898, 1900, 1919, 1943-48, 1950-52. Most of the volumes are fragile and enclosed in phase boxes for protection. The first 20 boxes include one year of each year that is included in the collection; the last 7 boxes are duplicate volumes.
