Overview
The Interlibrary Loan & Document Delivery (IDD) team works with a global network of libraries and other institutions to share materials that support scholarly research. Interlibrary loan (ILL) borrows books, dissertations, government documents, microforms and other loanable materials that are not owned by USC or are unavailable from USC's collection. ILL can also obtain articles, book chapters, and other materials from titles USC does not own or are otherwise not available. Once received, articles are delivered via a link in an email and physical items are made available at the Leavey Library Circulation Desk for check-out.
IDD manages these requests through our document managment system ILLiad which all USC undergraduate students, graduate students, staff, and faculty can register and use to submit requests.
In addition, IDD provides articles and documents owned by USC Libraries through our Document Delivery service. These requests are also delivered via a link in an email. Currently, the Document Delivery service is available to all USC graduate students, faculty, staff, and students enrolled in a Distance Education program. Please contact us if you are unsure if you currently qualify or have any questions about Document Delivery services.
If you are new to IDD services, please review our IDD Library Guide. When you are ready to request materials, please be sure to register with the ILLiad request system with your current and complete information.
Turnaround Time for IDD Requests
Article Requests: 24-48 hours
Book Requests: 3-5 days
IDD strives to deliver article requests 24 hours, however more time may be required if the item is from a journal or periodical that is rare or difficult to obtain. These requests are posted on our web server and the patron receives an email with a link to the file when the item has been delivered. Book or other physical item delivery on average takes anywhere from 3 to 5 days. Depending on the nature of the item and whether or not it can be obtained locally, it may take longer to receive it. Please contact us via phone or email if you need a more precise delivery time estimate.
Eligibility
ILL services are designed to support teaching, research, artistic creation, professional practice and public service conducted by the USC community including faculty, staff, and graduate and undergraduate students. See the Eligibility Requirements page for additional details.
As stated above, Document Delivery services are available to USC faculty and distance users enrolled in distance education courses such as the School of Social Work's MSW@USC program, Viterbi School's Distance Education Network or similiar program. Please contact us if you are unsure if you currently qualify or have any questions about Document Delivery services.
Please note: IDD priveleges may be suspended indefinitely if the service is being abused or policies are not being followed.
Material Types
Most types of research materials can be obtained from our network of suppliers, but there are a few items that might be difficult to obtain through interlibrary loan. These include materials that are non-circulating at other participating institutions such as audio recordings, visual recordings, and archival materials. Please note that we will try our best to supply these item types and that more time may be required to borrow them.
Please note that we will cancel requests for course textbooks. These titles are very difficult to obtain and cannot be kept for the entire semester. If the bookstore does not have the textbook in stock, please notify the bookstore or your instructor.
Patrons are encouraged to use the recall option for materials that are currently checked out (see library Lending Policy). If you are requesting lost or long-overdue materials owned by USC, please include a note in the field provided on the request form.
Interlibrary loan and Document Delivery requests must be submitted online using the ILLiad system request forms. First-time users are asked to create an account, which is separate from the user's library account.
For questions about using the interlibrary loan request form, please contact IDD department at idd@usc.edu.
