Stephen Hartke and Michael Tilson Thomas Win Grammy Awards
An array of Thornton faculty and alumni were nominated for the 55th annual Grammy Awards, and Distinguished Professor Stephen Hartke won "Best Contemporary Classical Composition" while and Thornton alumnus Michael Tilson Thomas won for "Best Orchestral Performance."
Chris Bartz Wins Southwest MTNA Young Artist Competition
Thornton DMA student Chris Bartz won the Southwest Music Teachers National Association Young Artist competition. In March, he will appear in the National Competition in Anaheim.
Jeffrey Parola Wins EAMA Prize
Parola, a DMA student in composition at Thornton, won the European American Musical Alliance Prize for his piece "The Long Valley." The EAMA Prize is awarded to a musical composition of profound artistic message, possessing a unique musical voice, and demonstrating clear, direct power of communication.
Jazzography
Studio/Jazz Guitar faculty Frank Potenza, Bruce Forman, and Pat Kelley are featured in the newly released documentary Bob Barry: Jazzography In Black & White highlighting one of the greatest jazz photographers of his generation.
USC Thornton Symphony Performs at Walt Disney Concert Hall
Principal Conductor Carl St.Clair led the USC Thornton Symphony in a stirring performance of Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess Suite and Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet at Walt Disney Concert Hall last Sunday.
Ken Cazan Directs West Coast Premiere Of Fall of the House of Usher
Vocal arts and opera faculty Ken Cazan is the stage director for Long Beach Opera's Fall of the House of Usher which opened last week. Subsequent performances take place on February 2-3 before heading to the Chicago Opera Theater on February 23.
A Chat With Trimpin
The LA Weekly interviewed Trimpin, an internationally acclaimed sound artist and MacArthur Genius Grant recipient, during his lecture and performance last week on USC's campus. The event was sponsored by Thornton, the Roski School of Fine Arts, and Visions and Voices: the USC Arts & Humanities Initiative.
The Oratorio Problem
Liszt: A Chorus of Voices, a book released by Pendragon Press last year, contains research on the composer by academics from around the world, including an interview with Thornton faculty Nick Strimple about Liszt's choral works titled "I Mean Now to Undertake the Oratorio Problem."
Midori, Angeleno
Midori, USC Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Strings program, was profiled in the Los Angeles Times about her move to Los Angeles and her prolific performance career, including the debut of a new concerto written for her by Hungarian composer Peter Eötvö with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
